IG Koome directed to arrest governor Sakaja with immediate effect!

On Thursday, April 11, the Senate Energy Committee instructed Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to apprehend Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

This decision came as Sakaja failed to attend a summons regarding the Miradi gas explosion in the Embakasi area earlier this year.

Additionally, the governor was fined Ksh500,000, in accordance with the legal obligations for leaders who disregard parliamentary summons without justification.

Following the governor’s arrest, IG Koome was directed to bring Sakaja before the committee on the morning of April 25th.

“Whoever is protecting Johnson Sakaja must know he is an accomplice and must look in the mirror and let justice prevail,” commented Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina.

“National Police Service, if you believe in following the law arrest Mr Sakaja and deliver him to the Senate,” Ledama added.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s recent fine for missing the Senate’s summons isn’t his first encounter with such penalties. On April 8, the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee (CPAIC) warned Sakaja after his absence from their summon.

In response, the committee gave Sakaja a 14-day ultimatum to appear and address audit queries. This incident echoes a similar situation in November of last year when Sakaja, along with Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, faced fines and arrest directives from the Senate.

The Senate’s previous action stemmed from the governors’ failure to attend sessions addressing audit concerns raised by the Auditor General regarding Water Companies in their respective counties between 2018 and 2021.

Initially, both governors requested rescheduling due to being out of the country, but the committee found their explanation insufficient.

The committee emphasized the importance of governors’ accountability in ensuring effective service delivery in a statement accompanying its decision. More
