Global fact checker exposes misinformation about CDF Ogolla’s accident in a chopper crash!

Agence France-Presse (AFP), a renowned French international news agency and global fact-checking authority, clarified on Wednesday a circulating image of a helicopter purportedly involved in the demise of former Kenyan Chief of Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla.

According to AFP, social media users mistakenly identified a Russian military helicopter as the aircraft involved in the incident, which actually occurred in the Sindar area of Elgeyo Marakwet.

In the misinterpreted video, a military helicopter was observed flying in a specific area before departing. Upon scrutiny by the French news agency, it was revealed that the mistaken helicopter belonged to the Russian military, specifically a Russian Ka-52 attack helicopter.

The erroneous post, accompanied by a screengrab, was shared on May 6, 2024, but the video itself was initially uploaded on Instagram on March 31, 2024, with a caption indicating it was a Russian Air Force Ka-52 Alligator conducting operations in Ukraine.

This video also made its way to TikTok on April 18, 2024, where it garnered over 3,300 shares.

Further investigation confirmed that the actual helicopter involved in the incident was a Bell UH-1H Huey II, a versatile aircraft utilized for troop transport, search and rescue missions, and various other purposes. More
