Shocking thing IEBC said after Raila demanded Cherera to take over from Wafula Chebukati!

Speaking in Mombasa on Wednesday 24th August 2022, the former prime minister pointed out that the IEBC chairman should recuse himself from overseeing Kakamega and Mombasa gubernatorial elections

Raila,  who campaigned for Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir’s gubernatorial bid argued that Chebukati, one of several parties named in over seven petitions challenging the presidential election results, is unqualified commissioner.

“Chebukati should disqualify himself from the elections ili haki iweze kutendeka hapa, ajiondoe kwenye hii uchaguzi inayoendelea, aawachie wale hawana mapendeleo.

“Tunasema ya kwamba uchaguzi wa Mombasa na Kakamega utafanywa chini ya usimamizi wa naibu wa mwenyekiti wa IEBC, Juliana Cherera,” Raila said.

Responding to the matte, IEBC, pointed out that the statement by Azimio flagbearer Raila Odinga was misleading, adding that Gubernatorial elections are run by gazetted Returning Officers as provided for by the law.

“The Commission wishes to inform the public that the statements made today by Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga with regard to the role of the Chairman in the two Gubernatorial elections scheduled for Monday 29th August 2022 are misleading.

“Gubernatorial elections are run by gazetted Returning Officers as provided for by the law. For avoidance of doubt, Returning Officers for Mombasa and Kakamega counties are Ibrahim Swalhah Yusuf and Joseph Ayatta, respectively.” The IEBC responded. More
